  1. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

The novel takes place in a futuristic, technologically advanced, dystopian society where people are genetically bred and divided into classes from birth. People are raised to become emotionless and to conform. This society is challenged by the story’s protagonist.

 

  1. 1984 by George Orwell

The story follows Winston Smith in his attempts to rebel against a totalitarian government and his life in Oceania, where citizens’ lives are heavily controlled and monitored.

 

  1. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Two teenagers, Marie-Laure LeBlanc and Werner Pfennig, on opposing sides of the Nazi regime, search for their identity and cope with the consequences of World War II. The two cross paths and change one another’s life forever.

 

  1. The Odyssey by Homer

The Odyssey presents Odysseus and his journey home following the Trojan War. He encounters mythical creatures and fights battles in order to reunite with his wife and son.

 

  1. The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga

Balram Halwai, an Indian man from the village of Laxmangarh, narrates his rags-to-riches story through letters he writes about his life story, exposing the corrupt class system in India.

 

  1. Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller

Salesman Willy Loman comes to the realization that he has failed at fulfilling his role as a husband and a father after spending many years on the road as a travelling salesman.

 

  1. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

When young scientist Victor Frankenstein learns the key to bringing life to inanimate objects, he assembles body parts to create a monster that seeks vengeance on his creator after being shunned by society… and Frankenstein himself.

 

  1. Fifth Business by Robertson Davies

Ramsay, a soldier returning from the torture of the Passchendaele Battle in World War I and awarded the Victoria Cross, is doomed to be trapped in no man’s land where myth, history, and memory all converge.
